May to September is the driest period and best for Lake Toba and orangutan treks. The wetter months of October to February can make jungle trails slippery.

Fly to Kualanamu Airport near Medan, usually via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. From Medan, Lake Toba is about four to five hours by road.
