The coastal city of Jayapura is the provincial capital, Lake Sentani is a large lake with stilt villages and a festival each June, and Biak Island has Second World War caves and reefs. Several governments advise against all or non-essential travel to parts of Papua, so check official travel advisories and use a licensed local operator. Facilities are limited, and prices can be higher than elsewhere in Indonesia. The drier months from May to October are the best.
