Naqsh-e Rustam is an ancient necropolis a few kilometres from Persepolis, where four huge cross-shaped tombs of Achaemenid kings, including Darius the Great, are carved into a cliff face. Beneath them are Sasanian rock reliefs showing kings in battle and investiture scenes. The site is free of crowds in the early morning and takes about an hour to see.
