Ilam Province lies on the western border with Iraq, in the foothills of the Zagros mountains. It is one of Iran’s greenest and least visited provinces, with oak forests, rivers and wide valleys. The provincial capital Ilam is a quiet town with parks and views, while Kabir Kuh, a long limestone ridge, dominates the landscape.Ancient ruins such as the Sasanian city of Darreh Shahr speak of a long past. Ilam tour packages suit slow travellers interested in nature and Lur and Kurdish culture, and spring is the best season. Check current advice for border areas before going.
