Chogha Zanbil is a ziggurat built around 1250 BCE by the Elamite king Untash-Napirisha, near ancient Susa. The huge stepped temple once rose to five levels, and today three stand as rough brick terraces within triple walls. It was one of the first places on the UNESCO World Heritage list, in 1979. Chogha Zanbil tour packages involve a half-day visit from Ahvaz or Susa, and sunset gives the brickwork a warm glow.
