South Khorasan lies on Iran’s eastern frontier, a dry province of mountains, saffron fields and desert towns. Its capital Birjand is known for the Akbarieh Garden, a UNESCO-listed qanat-fed oasis, and for its citadel and traditional houses.The old town of Qaen has an ancient mosque and a brick citadel, and the area is the centre of Iran’s saffron and barberry production. March to May and October to November are best. The saffron harvest in late October makes autumn special.
Birjand has an airport with flights from Tehran and Mashhad. The road from Mashhad takes around six hours.
