The Monastery of St. Thaddeus, also called Qara Kelisa or Black Church, stands in the hills near Chaldoran and is one of the oldest Armenian churches in the world, founded in the 1st century by tradition. The current black-and-white stone building dates from the 14th century and is part of the UNESCO-listed Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran. Pilgrims gather each July for a major festival. St. Thaddeus Monastery tour packages are best in summer, when the road is open.
