Halabja is Iraq’s newest and smallest governorate, set at the foot of the Hawraman mountains near the Iranian border. The town is known internationally for the 1988 chemical attack, and the Halabja Monument and Peace Museum tells the story with dignity. The green foothills and waterfalls around Ahmad Awa are a favourite family outing, and the countryside is famous for pomegranates and spring blossom. Halabja tour packages are short and reflective, best from March to June and September to October.
