Karbala is the site of the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE and one of the most important pilgrimage cities in the Shia world. The twin shrines of Imam Husayn and his half-brother Abbas face each other along a walkway lined with markets.The annual Arbaeen pilgrimage draws tens of millions on foot, making it one of the largest gatherings on earth. The governorate also includes the desert fortress of Ukhaidir. Karbala tour packages are pilgrimage tours, popular with Indian groups, and are best between October and April.
