Kirkuk is a multi-ethnic city of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen and Assyrians, set above one of the world’s oldest oil fields. The ancient Kirkuk Citadel stands on a mound in the middle of the city, with the old Qaysari Bazaar below. The Baba Gurgur fields, where natural gas fires have burned for thousands of years, are part of regional legend. Kirkuk tour packages are rarely sold on their own and are short cultural visits when conditions allow. Check security advice, as the area has seen tension, and travel in October to April.
