Najaf is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, centred on the shrine of Imam Ali, with its golden dome and mirrored halls. Millions of pilgrims arrive each year, many from India, and the old city around the shrine is full of bazaars selling prayer beads, dates and rugs.The huge Wadi al-Salam cemetery, among the largest in the world, stretches into the desert, while nearby Kufa has its historic mosque.
