The Malwiya Minaret, or Spiral Minaret, is the icon of Samarra, a 52-metre brick tower with a spiralling ramp that climbs the outside. It was built in the 9th century beside the Great Mosque of Samarra, once the largest mosque in the world, and is a UNESCO-listed monument. Visitors can climb the ramp for sweeping views over the plain. Malwiya Minaret tour packages are brief stops, best in the morning or late afternoon light.
