Among the places to visit in Eihei-ji is one of the two head temples of the Soto school of Zen, founded by the monk Dogen in 1244. A cluster of more than 70 wooden halls climbs the hillside beneath ancient cedar trees, linked by covered corridors. Visitors can walk the main halls and see the monks’ daily routine, and overnight stays are possible for meditation. Eihei-ji is about 30 minutes by bus from Fukui or Eiheiji-guchi station.
