Among the top places to visit in Mito is Kairakuen, a vast garden laid out by a feudal lord in 1842 for the public to enjoy. About 3,000 plum trees bloom here from late February, and a bamboo grove and a tea house add calm. Close by, Kodokan was one of Japan’s largest feudal schools. Mito is also known for natto and has a long Tokugawa history. The garden is a short bus ride or walk from Kairakuen station, which opens extra stops during the plum festival.
