The top places to visit in Kamakura include the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in, a bronze statue over 13 metres tall, and the hilltop Hase-dera temple, famed for its hydrangea garden and sea views. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine anchors the town, while the Zen temples of Kencho-ji and Engaku-ji offer peace. The Enoden tram runs along the coast to beaches. Kamakura was the seat of the shogunate in the twelfth century and is about an hour from Tokyo.
