The best places to visit in Uji include Byodo-in, whose elegant Phoenix Hall appears on the ten yen coin and is a UNESCO monument from the eleventh century. The town is also the birthplace of Japanese green tea, and the main street has teahouses selling matcha soft serve, soba and sweets. Visitors can join a tea-making workshop at the Taihoan teahouse. Uji lies about 20 minutes south of Kyoto by JR train.
