The nearby port of Toba is the home of cultured pearls, with diving women, an aquarium and island cruises. Inland, Iga is known as the home of the ninja, while the southern Kumano coast offers a section of the old pilgrimage trail. Mie is within easy reach of Nagoya, Osaka and Kyoto, and fits neatly between them.
