Miyagi tour packages are centred on Sendai, the ‘city of trees’, which is the largest city in the Tohoku region and has a relaxed, leafy character. Nearby Matsushima Bay is counted among Japan’s three most scenic views, with more than 200 pine-clad islets, and the hot spring valley of Naruko adds autumn colour and kokeshi doll craft. Beef tongue and zunda sweets are local specialities. With fast Shinkansen links from Tokyo, Miyagi is a convenient gateway to the north and works well as a two-night stop.

The Tohoku Shinkansen takes about 90 minutes from Tokyo Station to Sendai. Sendai Airport also has international and domestic connections.
