Among the places to visit in Horyu-ji is the temple complex founded in 607 by Prince Shotoku, whose Kondo main hall and five-storey pagoda are the oldest wooden buildings in the world. The Yumedono Hall and the Great Treasure Hall hold early Buddhist art, including the Kudara Kannon statue. The site was among Japan’s first UNESCO listings. Horyu-ji is a short bus or train ride from Nara and a good choice for history lovers.
