Oita tour packages are all about hot springs, since the prefecture produces more hot spring water than anywhere else in Japan. Beppu has steaming ‘hells’ and sand baths, Yufuin is a chic town beneath twin peaks with art shops and a misty lake, and the Kunisaki Peninsula is an old centre of mountain Buddhism with stone carvings. The region is also known for karaage fried chicken and Bungo beef. Oita can be reached by plane from Tokyo and Osaka, and the area is lovely at any season.

The Sonic limited express links Hakata and Oita in around 2 hours 20 minutes, and Beppu is 15 minutes further. Oita Airport has flights from Tokyo and Osaka.
