Izumo Taisha is one of Japan’s oldest and most sacred shrines, famous for its huge shimenawa rope and as a place to pray for good relationships. Matsue has an original black castle and canals with sightseeing boats, and the Iwami Ginzan silver mine is a UNESCO site set in the forest. The prefecture is quiet, with few foreign visitors, and rich in soba noodles and shijimi clams. Travellers should plan around slower regional trains and buses.
