Tochigi tour packages centre on Nikko, a mountain town two hours north of Tokyo whose UNESCO-listed shrines and temples, led by the gilded Toshogu, honour the first Tokugawa shogun. Beyond the shrines, Lake Chuzenji, the thundering Kegon Falls and the marshes of Senjogahara offer fine scenery, especially in October. The prefecture capital Utsunomiya is known for gyoza dumplings, and the Nasu highlands bring hot springs, farms and a safari park. Nikko is a classic day trip but deserves an overnight stay.
