Among the best places to visit in Gokayama are the small mountain villages of Suganuma and Ainokura, where steep thatched farmhouses in the gassho-zukuri style have survived for centuries. They are part of the UNESCO listing shared with Shirakawa-go in Gifu. Quiet and less visited than its neighbour, Gokayama also has folk song traditions and washi paper workshops. Visit in winter when the roofs are covered in snow, or in clear autumn. Buses run from Takaoka or Shin-Takaoka stations.
