Among the places to visit in Zao Onsen is a traditional hot spring town below a mountain ski area known worldwide for its juhyo, the ‘snow monsters’ formed when conifers freeze under windblown snow. Ropeways carry visitors to viewpoints from late December to March, with night illuminations. The milky sulphur water is said to be good for skin. In summer, hikers visit the Okama crater lake. Zao is reached by bus from Yamagata Station in about 40 minutes.
