Yamanashi tour packages are a favourite for travellers who want classic views of Mount Fuji. The Fuji Five Lakes region, with Lake Kawaguchiko as its hub, offers lakeside onsen, cherry blossom, autumn leaves and the iconic red pagoda at Fujiyoshida. The Kofu basin is Japan’s top fruit and wine region, with tastings at Katsunuma. Mount Fuji is climbed in July and August only, and views are clearest in the morning, particularly from late autumn to spring. Yamanashi is about two hours from Tokyo.

Late April for blossoms and November for autumn colour at Lake Kawaguchiko, with the clearest Fuji views from December to February. The climbing season runs July to early September.
Two days with an overnight at Lake Kawaguchiko are ideal. Add a third for Kofu wineries or the Fuji Q Highland amusement park.
Take a direct highway bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko in around two hours, or the Fuji Excursion limited express from Shinjuku.
