Sablayan, in Occidental Mindoro, is the base for Apo Reef Natural Park, the largest coral reef system in the country and one of the world’s best snorkelling and diving spots. Visitors see sharks, turtles and big reef fish from the sandbar islets, and a lighthouse stands on Apo Island. Boats cross from town in about two hours, and the trip needs calm seas, so April to June is best. Plan at least two nights.
