Masmak Fortress is a clay-and-mud-brick fort in the old centre of Riyadh and a symbol of the city’s history. It was here in 1902 that Abdulaziz Al Saud captured the city, starting the process that led to the modern kingdom. Inside, a museum shows weapons, photographs and a spear mark in the main door, left during the fight. The surrounding Al-Deira area has traditional souks, including Souq Al Zal, where carpets, antiques and dates are sold. Masmak Fortress tour packages work as a short morning visit.
