November to February is the coolest and most pleasant season, with clear skies and chilly mornings in the hills. March and April can bring smoke from seasonal burning, while the rainy season runs from June to October.
Three to four days cover the Old City, Doi Suthep, a sanctuary visit and one day trip. Five days allow Doi Inthanon and a drive towards Chiang Rai.
Fly to Bangkok from India and take a one-hour domestic flight to Chiang Mai, or reach it by overnight train. Some Indian cities also have seasonal direct flights, so check current schedules.
