Lamphun tour packages explore one of the oldest cities in northern Thailand, which dates back to the Haripunchai kingdom of the 7th century. The golden Wat Phra That Haripunchai is the centrepiece, with a tall chedi that glimmers over the old town. Nearby temples show a mix of Mon and Lanna style, and the countryside produces longan fruit, traditional cotton weaving and silk. Lamphun is only 25 km from Chiang Mai, so it makes a quiet half-day outing with fewer crowds than its famous neighbour.

November to February is the most pleasant weather for temple walking. In July and August the longan harvest brings fruit stalls to the roadside.
Half a day is enough from Chiang Mai, and a full day allows time for weaving villages.
