Mae Hong Son tour packages head into the far north-west, where steep mountains, mist-filled valleys and Shan-style temples stand near the Myanmar border. Pai, a bohemian valley town, is the most popular base, with cafes, waterfalls and canyon viewpoints. The provincial town of Mae Hong Son has a lake and a hilltop temple, and Ban Rak Thai is a Chinese tea village by a lake. Winding mountain roads add to the adventure. The remote setting means a slow pace, and visitors should check conditions near the Myanmar border before travelling.

Visa-free for short tourist stays (30 to 60 days; check latest rules; Digital Arrival Card required)
November to February is cool and clear with sea-of-mist mornings. From June to October, roads can be slippery, and March may be smoky.
Three to four days cover Pai and Mae Hong Son town. The mountain road loop takes time, so allow extra days if you want to include tea villages.
Fly into Bangkok from India and connect to Chiang Mai, then drive about 3 hours to Pai. A small domestic airport at Mae Hong Son town has limited flights.
