Nakhon Ratchasima tour packages, often called Korat tours, centre on the largest province in Thailand. The star is Khao Yai National Park, a UNESCO-listed forest of waterfalls, gibbons and wild elephants that is only a few hours from Bangkok. The province also has the Khmer sanctuary of Phimai, vineyards and cattle farms around Pak Chong, and a lively city with the Thao Suranari monument. Cool hill resorts, good barbecue and wine tasting make it a favourite weekend break, and it is the gateway to the northeast known as Isan.

November to February is cool and ideal for Khao Yai trails and wine country. The rainy season is lush and the waterfalls are full, but leeches are common on the trails.
Two to three days cover Khao Yai, Pak Chong and Phimai. A longer four-day trip adds the city of Korat and Wang Nam Khiao.
Fly into Bangkok from India and drive about 2.5 to 3 hours north-east to Pak Chong or Khao Yai. Trains and buses link Bangkok to Korat.
