In the town, Wat Phumin is famed for a mural that depicts a whispering couple, the Thai equivalent of the Mona Lisa. Outside town, the high ridges of Doi Phukha National Park protect rare plants and the Chomphu Phukha tree, and Bo Kluea is a village with ancient salt wells. The roads are winding but scenic, and the pace of life in Nan is slow, quiet and refreshingly uncommercial.

November to February is cool and clear with excellent views. October brings the Nan boat races and a festive mood, while the rainy months make mountain roads slippery.
Three days give time for the town, Doi Phukha and Bo Kluea at a comfortable speed, as distances are long.
Fly into Bangkok from India and take a domestic flight to Nan (limited), or fly to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai and drive 4 to 5 hours. A private driver is recommended for the mountain roads.
