Sardis, near Salihli, was the capital of the Lydian kingdom and the place where the first gold coins were minted. The restored Roman gymnasium and the huge synagogue, with colourful mosaics, are the main highlights, while the Temple of Artemis rises in the valley below with two surviving columns. The site is spacious and peaceful, with an excavation house and small bazaar. It is one of the seven churches of Revelation.
