Malazgirt is a small town and the site of the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, when Seljuk forces led by Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantine army and opened the way for Turkish settlement across Anatolia. A memorial, a victory monument and the Malazgirt Museum tell the story. The wide plain around the town is quiet and green in spring. Local honey and dairy products can be bought in town.
