Cao Bang tour packages lead to Vietnam’s far north-east border, a region of karst hills, rivers and ethnic minority villages. Ban Gioc Waterfall, shared with China, is the largest waterfall in the country and one of the most photogenic in Southeast Asia. Nearby, the 3-kilometre Nguom Ngao Cave has colourful stalactites, and the Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark covers wide landscapes of limestone and valleys. The region also holds Pac Bo Cave, linked to Ho Chi Minh’s return to Vietnam. It is remote and best for travellers who enjoy slow, scenic drives.

September and October, when the waterfall is full and rice fields are golden, are the best months. Winter can be cold, and summer brings heavy rain.
Two to three days work well, giving time to drive from Hanoi and see Ban Gioc, Nguom Ngao Cave and the geopark.
It takes about six to seven hours by road from Hanoi, often by private car. A direct bus service also runs but is slow.
