Dien Bien tour packages visit the remote north-western valley where Vietnamese forces won the decisive 1954 battle against French colonial troops. The Dien Bien Phu battlefield has preserved bunkers, hills such as A1, and a museum with a huge panorama painting. Beyond history, the province offers the green Pa Khoang Lake, the forest of Muong Phang, rice-filled valleys and Thai and Hmong communities. The best way to arrive is a short flight from Hanoi, which saves a long mountain road. It suits history lovers and slow travellers.
