September to October is best for golden terraces, and April to May for clear skies and green fields. December to February can bring cold fog and occasional snow.

Take the expressway from Hanoi to Lao Cai, about four hours, then a 40-minute transfer up to Sapa. Overnight sleeper trains also run to Lao Cai.
