Pu Luong Nature Reserve is a quiet highland area of terraced rice fields, bamboo waterwheels and limestone ridges. Visitors trek between villages such as Kho Muong and Don, cross rope bridges and stay in Thai stilt-house homestays. The rice is gold in late September and green in May to June. It is less touristy than Sapa and Mai Chau, though facilities are simple. Plan two nights, and travel with a guide for longer treks.
