Carinthia tourism revolves around warm lakes and high mountains in Austria’s southernmost state, near the Italian and Slovenian borders. Summer temperatures let you swim in the Wörthersee, Millstätter See and a dozen other lakes, which is rare for the Alps. The capital Klagenfurt has a pretty square and a miniature-world park, Villach is a thermal spa town, and in the west the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak, rises above the village of Heiligenblut. The Carinthian summer lasts from late May to September, and winter offers family skiing at Bad Kleinkirchheim. Three to four days work well, often on the way to Italy or Slovenia.
