Upper Austria tour packages centre on the Salzkammergut, a lake-and-mountain region where villages cling to the shores beneath limestone peaks. Hallstatt, a UNESCO-listed salt-mining village, is the star, and the region’s film-location lakes include Wolfgangsee and Traunsee. The state capital Linz adds a modern Danube city with digital art and a baroque old town, while Bad Ischl was the summer retreat of Emperor Franz Joseph. Most visitors base themselves near Hallstatt or St. Wolfgang for two nights and arrive from Salzburg, which is only an hour away. The region is prettiest from May to October.

May to October is best for lakes and mountain views, with September often quiet and clear. Hallstatt is busiest in July and August, so mornings and evenings are calmer.
A day trip from Salzburg covers Hallstatt, but two nights allow time for the Dachstein cable cars and a lake cruise. Add Linz for a third day.
Fly to Munich or Vienna, then travel by train to Salzburg and continue by coach or car. Hallstatt is about 70 minutes from Salzburg and has no through road, so you park on the edge of the village.
