The region is a mix of mountain scenery, historic battlefields and coastal villages, and it is easily reached by road from the capital.Arachova, a stone village on the slopes of Parnassus, is a favourite for winter skiing and cheese, while Galaxidi offers a peaceful harbour. Thermopylae marks the famous stand of King Leonidas, and the island of Skyros lies offshore. Most visitors take a day trip from Athens, though one overnight lets you enjoy the evening light in Delphi.
