The region is also home to Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the gods, and to Vergina, where the royal tombs of ancient Macedon were found.The coast of Halkidiki is dotted with sandy bays, while the Edessa waterfalls and Pella add heritage and greenery inland. Thessaloniki is known for Byzantine churches, food and nightlife. The area is less commercial than the Cyclades and suits families who like beaches and history together. Three to four nights work well, and June to September is the beach season.
