The Samaria Gorge is a 16-kilometre trek through a national park in the White Mountains, with cliffs up to 500 metres high and a famously narrow section called the Iron Gates. The walk ends at Agia Roumeli on the south coast, where a ferry carries hikers onwards. It needs sturdy shoes and fitness, and is open only in the dry months.
