County Monaghan tourism covers a quiet border county of rounded drumlin hills, small lakes and a strong literary tradition. The county town of Monaghan has a handsome Georgian centre and a good county museum, while Inniskeen honours poet Patrick Kavanagh, who was born nearby. Rossmore Forest Park offers woodland walks and a children’s play area. The lakes are popular with coarse anglers, and the Ulster Canal Greenway is a new cycling route. It is about 1.5 hours from Dublin and sits on the road to Northern Ireland, so it makes a calm stopover.

May to September has the best weather for forest walks and angling. Autumn colour in the woodlands is a bonus.
One day is enough for the town, the museum and a walk in Rossmore. Anglers and cyclists may want an overnight stay.
Monaghan town is about 1.5 hours from Dublin by road via the M1 and N2. Bus services run, but a car is more flexible.
