Irkutsk Oblast tour packages are the classic way to see Lake Baikal, the deepest and oldest freshwater lake on Earth, holding about one-fifth of the world’s unfrozen freshwater. Irkutsk, a city of carved wooden houses, is the base for trips to Listvyanka on the shore and to Olkhon Island, with its sacred Shaman Rock. The historic Circum-Baikal Railway runs through tunnels along the cliffs. In winter, the lake freezes into a vast sheet of clear ice that visitors can walk, skate and drive across.

February and March are best for walking on the clear ice, and July and August are best for hiking and boat trips. Early autumn is quiet and colourful.
Four days cover Irkutsk and Listvyanka. Five to seven days add Olkhon Island and the Circum-Baikal Railway.
Travellers from India usually fly to Moscow, direct or via a Gulf hub, and continue by a flight of about six hours from Moscow to Irkutsk, or on the Trans-Siberian railway in several days. A Russian visa must be arranged before departure.
