Khakassia tour packages cover a sunny steppe republic on the upper Yenisei, with a wealth of ancient history and salt lakes. Abakan, the capital, is a modest city with a museum of Khakass culture. June to August is warm and best for Lake Shira and the steppe. Winter is cold but dry and sunny.

Travellers from India usually fly to Moscow, direct or via a Gulf hub, and continue by a flight of about four and a half hours from Moscow to Abakan, or by train via Krasnoyarsk. A Russian visa must be arranged before departure.
