Nenets Autonomous Okrug tour packages cover one of the remotest corners of European Russia, a tundra region on the Barents Sea coast. The small capital, Naryan-Mar, stands on the Pechora River and is the base for reindeer herder visits and Arctic tours. The Nenets people migrate with their herds over huge distances, living in tent-like chums, and visitors may share a meal and learn about this way of life. Summers are short and bright, and winters are bitterly cold.

June to August is the warmest period, when the tundra is green and flowering. Winter is extreme but offers reindeer sledges and aurora views.
Three to four days cover Naryan-Mar and a tundra excursion. It is best arranged with a local operator.
Travellers from India usually fly to Moscow, direct or via a Gulf hub, and continue by flight from Moscow or Arkhangelsk to Naryan-Mar, often via Arkhangelsk; roads are minimal and many trips use helicopters or boats. A Russian visa must be arranged before departure.
