Smolensk Oblast tour packages cover western Russia’s historic gateway, a land of fortress walls, lakes and heavy history. Smolensk is guarded by the remains of a 16th-century fortress wall designed by Fyodor Kon, with powerful towers still standing along the city’s hillsides, and its Assumption Cathedral dominates the skyline. Outside the city, the artistic estate of Talashkino and quiet forests along the upper Dnieper add variety. The region was a battlefield in 1812 and again in the Second World War.

May to September is best for walking the fortress walls and visiting Talashkino. Autumn colours are lovely, while winter is cold and snowy.
Two days cover Smolensk and Talashkino. Add a third if you want the Gnezdovo mounds and smaller villages.
Travellers from India usually fly to Moscow, direct or via a Gulf hub, and continue by train or road in about four to five hours from Moscow; services run frequently along the Moscow to Minsk corridor. A Russian visa must be arranged before departure.
