May to September is best for walking Kazan and visiting Sviyazhsk by boat. Winter brings snow and ice rinks, and Ramadan festivals draw visitors in some years.
Three days cover Kazan well. Add a day for Sviyazhsk and a second for Bolgar and Yelabuga.
Travellers from India usually fly to Moscow, direct or via a Gulf hub, and continue by a fast flight of about three hours from Moscow to Kazan, or by train in around eleven hours; direct connections from Indian cities may be limited. A Russian visa must be arranged before departure.
