Fribourg tourism takes you to a bilingual canton on the line between French and German Switzerland, known for medieval towns, rolling pre-Alps and cheese. The capital Fribourg is built on a bend of the Sarine river, with bridges, towers and a Gothic cathedral on the cliffs.Gruyères, with its hilltop castle and cheese dairy, is the star for visitors, and Murten is a walled lakeside town you can circle on the ramparts. Chocolate lovers can visit the Cailler factory nearby. The canton is rarely crowded and fits well into a trip between Bern and Montreux. A day or two is enough, with April to October the best period.

April to October is best for walking, castles and lakeside views. Gruyères is lovely in autumn, and winter is quiet but atmospheric.

Take a train to Bulle and then a local bus or train to Gruyères, about an hour. Fribourg city is 30 minutes by train from Bern.
